From Digger (the manufacturer): This diff skid was designed and built with a few ideas in mind:
1. Clearance – Some other diff skids on the market sacrifice clearance for protection. This diff skid fits flush against the bottom of the rear diff. The only clearance lost is the thickness of the material.
2. Ease of use - Our diff skid is currently the only one on the market that allows diff fluid servicing without removing the skid. This is accomplished by guarding the factory drain plug standoff with a 1/2" long piece of 3" DOM tubing (1/2" wall). This provides the best protection without sacrificing accessibility.
3. Fail safe attachment system - Our diff skid is mounted under tension and designed to be an integral part of the skid structure. There is no slipping or sliding into the driveshaft or 3rd member yoke. The drain plug stand off does not only protect but also acts as part of the attachment system.
4. Strength - Our diff skid body is made from 1 solid piece of 1/4" HR plate. It is CNC plasma cut and bent to conform to the rear diff of the FJ cruiser. There are 4 seams that are welded inside and out to ensure maximum strength and durability. As mentioned above, it is put on and torqued under tension. This "pre-loads" the diff skid and allows it to also to act as a kind of axle truss to strengthen the interface between the diff housing and the axle housings.

bajarackBaja Rack has introduced a new basket insert option for your FJ Cruiser. It’s not a full length basket, which means you’ll have a little room at the rear of your rack to use as you like. It ships with an airdam and has tabs for up to four lights.
This basket does not increase the height of your FJ, so if you fit in your garage now you still will after this basket. A stretch net is also included. Look for a full review in an upcoming issue of FJC Magazine.

Which tire to choose?
With over 40,000 miles on our original BFG All Terrain tires, discussions of what our next tire should be have begun at FJC Magazine headquarters. A quick Google of ‘off road tires’ yields more than 300,000 results, so we won’t find any answers there. Heading to the wheels & tires section on FJCruiserForums.com shows a little more promise. There are dozens of discussions on virtually every option. Still, the tire you choose is (like many things in the FJ world) a little like religion. That’s true for us as well, our family has owned seven different 4x4 vehicles in the last 10 years, and we’ve run the BFG A/T tires on all of them.all tires

FJ Cruiser Brite BoxToytec Lifts has just announced that they're now a distributor for the Brite Box.

From the site:
The BRITE BOX™ is a self contained device that greatly contributes to driving safety on dark roads by improving both the output and coverage of standard vehicle headlights.
All vehicle headlights have two distinct beam patterns: low beam for close range illumination, and high beam for long range illumination. In most vehicles, when the high beams are activated, the low beams shut off. The resulting choice of "near" vs. "far" illumination compromises safety and comfort because at a maximum, only 54% of the vehicle's lighting potential is being used at any given time.

This looks like a really great alternative to high-end HID light conversions. We expect that if you match this product with a headlight bulb upgrade you'll see a VERY noticeable difference. We're hoping to check this mod out very soon, so look for a video & lots of pics in the near future!

xWhiteTRDFJCruiserMany FJ Owners have painted the silver on the outside of their FJ. The most common mod of this type is to rattle can the mirrors, door handles, bezel, and bumper wings in flat or matte black. TRD’s that are ‘blacked’ out are very popular, so we thought we’d try something different. When we started discussing doing this mod to our TRD, Angie reminded me of an awesome FJ we saw on the trail. Early in 2008 we did a couple of runs with Jock (RockyMtnHigh), who has an awesome ‘whited out’ Brick FJ. Instead of the traditional black, he painted most of his silver trim pieces bright white. What Angie & I both loved about this mod is that it not only makes the truck stand out more, but it also really enhances the ‘retro’ FJ-40 look. Which we feel is commemorated in the “white out” of our TRD.

My intentions with my FJ are setting it up for daily driver, off roading, overlanding, and expeditions. In this article I’m going to discuss the the Maggiolina AirLand medium tent, which was purchased in March of 2008. Most of the mods I have done to the rig are to make it self sufficient when away from home, so the AirLand is a very necessary item. This roof top tent allows me to camp on a whim so to speak, since it only takes a few minutes to set it up once you are parked.

I did an extensive amount of research online and in various outdoor forums, and came to the conclusion that this tent was the right one for me. Since it will pretty much be on the rig full time, a hard shell model was the best choice. I decided that other options that have canvas tops may not hold up quite as well  to the elements. This style is also easier to setup than most others on the market, and it is a well proven model used by many overland/expedition teams around the globe. Setting it up is as simple as inserting a hand crank in the side and turning it to lift the lid up and raise the canvas. Storing the tent is also very simple, just reverse the crank and stuff the canvas inside of the unit. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. (Video Demonstration)

The new OEM light bar from BajaRack  is made of 0.061" Carbon Steel with Zinc primer coating and black powder paint. It includes all of the mounting hardware for installation on the FJ Cruiser factory roof rack.
Four lights (7" diameter max) can be installed and Bajarack also sells a harness that supports up to four lights. The harness is made with TXL high temp wire, Nylon split loom and weather proof mating connectors.
The light bar retails for  $190.00 and is available by contacting BajaRack at 760-621-0171, it will be available for order on their website soon.
This looks like a great solution for an inexpensive & robust light bar. We look forward to seeing it on the trail.

In case you haven't seen it yet, Aluminess has just come out with one of the most exciting products for the FJ: An all aluminum front bumper. This bumper weighs in at only 43lbs (with no brush guard), less than 1/3 of some of the other bumpers available.

The bumper is winch compatible and includes a black powder-coat finish, tow hooks, and built in light mounts.   It's is offered with no brush guard, with a full brush guard, and with a bull bar.

While aluminum bumpers are new to the FJ Cruiser, they've been available for a variety of vehicles for many years. We can't wait to see this bumper in action on the trail. Look for more in depth info on this bumper soon!

When you’re ready to install off road lights, make sure you have lots of time and patience, a proper installation will take plenty of both. Dealing with wiring, soldering, electrical connections, switches, and the disassembly off the FJ's interior can be pretty demanding. We only recommend installing lights to those with quite a bit of experience in modifying vehicles. This is about as difficult as it gets.

With that warning out of the way, let’s get to it! Please keep in mind that the following is an account of how we chose to install our lights. Every offroad light install will be different, please evaluate your situation and do what’s right for your aftermarket lighting needs.

Off road lights are on virtually every FJ owners wish list. Some form of additional lighting is vital if you plan to hit the trails after dark. There are literally dozens of different light combinations available for our trucks, how do you know which one is best? Ultimately the light setup that’s right for you depends upon how you intend to use them and your environment. FJ’s in the northeast will no doubt have a very different setup than those that spend most of their time in the desert. Combinations of large driving lights, amber lights for greater visibility in dusty areas, and smaller fog lights that are closer to the ground all have their place.

We gathered several FJ’s for a night run and light comparison late in December in an attempt to capture how some of the different setups perform. We were not able to test some of the popular brands of off road lights such as IPF and KC, but we did have enough combinations to illustrate some of the options available.
